This was my first ever metalworking project. I created it at cellspace during my first class. My sister (who later received a lamp from me) gave me the hand made lamp shade for Christmas. I kept searching for a lamp that worked and couldn't find one. It was a good excuse to take a welding class. The main body of the lamp is extremely thin walled steel tubing coated in black oxide. I heated it very gently with a torch and made the bends according to a line I drew on a large piece of paper. The feet were a couple of rusty half rounds from the Bayshore Metals scrap bin that they gave me for free (I was very happy). You turn it on and off by touching the body of the lamp. You usually need to lick your finger because of the oxide.
